![]() ![]() To finalise this research into the theory behind layout design, I put together a small mind-map in my sketchbook. These were the Golden Ratio, Rule of Thirds, and 960 system. Both gave comprehensive explanations on how to use grids when designing page layouts, and touched on the Golden Section technique as well.ĬreativeBloq stressed the importance of using grids to:ĭesignmodo gave a brief history on Design Theory, before going on to talk about 3 grid layout systems that are widely used. This led me to the sites CreativeBloq and Designmodo. I already have quite a solid understanding of how the Golden Ratio could be used in design, however felt that I should delve into more depth on how to apply grid-theory to layouts. It suggests that there are 2 main practices that one should follow when creating a layout design: The Phi (Golden Section) rule, and Grid theory. Fixing the design grid with text and stylistic elements. This explains the principles of design in a very concise fashion, also provides information on the workflow of creating a successful layout: Use a single, wider column with a smaller column for pullout quotes, and other types of supporting content.įollowing on from this, I looked at the University of Alaska Fairbanks’ page on the Layout and Page Design Fundamentals, found here.Divide text into two, or three equal columns for best results on a standard page.Use multiple columns to organize text, and visuals into smaller (more easily read) blocks of information.Divide the page into four or five columns for most flexibility. Make sure that the grid is flexible, but that the grid sections are not too small. Use a grid to help organize elements on the page.Use elements with visual weight, intensity, or color for focus. Use large, bold display type, and/or graphics for the creation of focus.Make sure the elements have a function that supports the content. Draw the reader’s attention to important elements by contrasting size (scale), color, and page position.Draw attention to boxes, or images by using borders with a drop shadow.Allow the edges of text columns, and artwork to create the illusion of borders.Use borders when you want to frame and draw attention to information (e.g., table of contents, calendars, special notes). It states that the principles of layout design are: ![]() It begins by presenting the rules of design and composition, before going on to reveal how they can be broken in visually appealing ways. One of these links was to an article on the site WebDesignerDepot. This was probably one of the best sources of information for layout theory. I began by consulting some of the links that were given to us earlier on in the year. The theory part of this brief was intentionally quite extensive. My final piece has been created using a combination of both Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. Theory was an important aspect of this piece, and we were required to research and take inspiration from a range of successful examples online. This final Brief involved designing the layout for a 2-page magazine spread. ![]()
